Lisa J Carmen CD Release Video

Lisa J. Carman’s music is intensely personal. She has an ability to lure you into her world with stories and above all, with passionate singing. Just when you think you know Lisa Carman, she surprises you.
Her varied styles of music, the clarity and range of her vocals, and the pitch-perfect voice make you ask: where will she go next? Her song Count Me In is featured on the new Violet Femmes Volume 2 CD, due out in late 2008.

Lisa's new album, Treasures & Trash (2007), is a break-through album for Carman. “I had the most invested [in this album] emotionally and musically,” says Carman. It is her fifth album, and contains deep strains of American style, with lovingly produced songs.
Here is a video montage from her CD Release concert, back to back segments of the songs found on Treasures and Trash.

The extremely talented musicians backing her on this album give her a new confidence that she sails upon. She is joined by her veteran collaborators Caitlin Thomas on violin and viola, Adrienne Bellis on close harmony vocals, and Dave Devlin on dobro and mandolin. With class-act studio musicians Jeff Nelson on bass, New Mexico’s Kevin Zoernig on keyboards,
Mark Clark on drums, and Daniel Ward on guitars, Carman has assembled a solid core of sound for this production.
Listen for the accompaniments of cello and electric guitar. Arranged by Carman, the music is both simple and energetic; directed by Carman, the band has a great time with her music.
“How to Treat a Woman”, a signature song by Carman, is a beautiful waltz that you could dance to all night long. The plaintive sound of the early Americana fiddle that opens the song, and the crystal clear, soft voice invite you into the intimate world of Carman’s stories of love and tenderness in a tough world.
Echoing harmonies and good deep chords trace her themes -- treat a woman with some understanding and she’ll “give back many more times with love.” Carman’s
characters let you know exactly how to open the heart of a woman. They create forthright and sensual portraits in sound; directions for a deeper appreciation of love and life.
Carman is at her best in this album. Her songs encourage you to be grateful for the love you have, but to reach always for the freedom and the power to dream for what you don’t have. Her characters have no regrets.

Here are love songs and odes to the western spaces of America, where a sky full of stars and the coyotes “far and near” are as full of romance as a lover’s tender touch.
Lisa J. Carman. If you like rootsy country and folk, jazzy layers of harmony, and some comfortable rock and roll, you will love this singer-songwriter for her personal music and stories.

Claire Hayek Reminscent of Cher

Montreal's Claire Hayek is one of the artists to be heard on the upcoming Vol 2 of Violet Femmes. Here is a review of her new CD, Intention. You can hear her songs at Claire Hayek on Facebook.
Her song 'If Only I' is the track selected for Violet Femmes Vol 2, out in November 2008.

CD Review Claire Hayek- Intention by Wildy's World

'Claire Hayek has a vocal sound that is reminiscent of Cher without the gross vocoder fabrications that she adopted later in her career. Hayek has the same sort of dark timbre to her voice and is very distinctive and easy to recognize (once you know the voice)...'

' If Only I is one of the gems of Intention. Stripped down to just guitar and voice, you can start to see the true potential of Claire Hayek...'

' Just Another is a great soundtrack tune, probably for a nighttime teen drama or reality show...'

'Also worth a listen is What About (Mother), written with a baroque opening that opens up into Claire Hayek and piano. The song is pure theater and allows Claire Hayek to paint a very different picture with her voice. This is where you'll decide that you have to buy absolutely anything the woman ever puts out...If you're not convinced yet, then check out Redemption Song. You'll weep.'

'Claire Hayek should be around for a long time

Jordan Reimer, busy gigging

Violet Femmes Jordan Reimer continues to perform in her refreshing style.

Sometimes a voice so unique comes along, that it catches you completely by surprise and sucks you in, hook, line and sinker! Such is the case for the amazingly-talented, young singer-songwriter, Jordan Reimer. With tunes that run the sonic gamut, Jordan sounds most comfortable and charismatic when singing her fantastic, indie folk-styled songs. Fans of Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins should definitely be on the lookout for Jordan. With style and grace that are far beyond her years, and a natural talent that hasn’t begun to near its apex— we are truly witnessing the launch of what’s destined to be a storied career! - www.myxer.com

Jordan is playing lots of gigs in California, and congratulations to this committed and talented songwriter.

Bonnie Ste-Croix on International Compilation Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

There is a project in honour of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I am so happy to spread the word that Canadian Artist Bonnie Ste-Croix has been selected for the International Compilation Celebrating the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Bonnie Ste-Croix's song “You Are The Reason” has been chosen to be part of an International creative collaboration entitled Dream On! -a project dedicated to creating positive change in the world and honouring the memory, work and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

All songs included in this project are either directly inspired by Dr. King and his impact on the world, or in alignment with his message of peaceful empowerment.

Dream On! will also be creating a documentary on this project, its intent, its music and its artists. In addition Dream On! will be part of a concert in Washington DC on Martin Luther King Day in 2009.

In response to the announcement of the news Bonnie Ste-Croix stated, “This is one of the most meaningful moments in my music career. My dream has always been to make a living doing music and have that path allow me the ability to do humanitarian work. I have written that exact vision out so many times- it is such a deep honour for me to be part of this project that brings both music and the principles of peaceful empowerment together. My intention in writing “You Are The Reason” was specifically around trying to create change without anger or aggression …the song was all about creating a message of hope and inspiration at a time when our whole world needs to stand up and remember that we all have a part in keeping peace and human dignity alive.”

Bonnie’s song “You Are The Reason” was also recently selected for B.C.’s Music Against Racism (MAR) CD Compilation part of a "Make a Case Against Racism" kit for Grades 4-7 in British Columbia. This project works to promote multiculturalism, cultural diversity, and awareness of racism.

“You Are The Reason” was previously posted on this blog around Christmas of last year. I am proud to repost it for anyone out there who missed it,
This is a beautiful song and video.

Punk Poet Princess Heather Haley Releases Princess Nut CD May 29th

PUNK POET PRINCESS HEATHER HALEY RELEASES PRINCESS NUT CD

For immediate release - Vancouver, BC, April 11, 2008

Old School and proud of it, Heather Haley and RPW Records are gearing up for a spring release of her groundbreaking AURAL Heather CD of spoken word songs, Princess Nut. Come celebrate at the official AURAL Heather Princess Nut CD launch, Thursday, May 29, 8 PM, at the Media Club in Vancouver, BC, with AURAL Heather and special guests Susan Cormier, Beth Southwell and her band, Kedrick James, and emcee Kyle Hawke.

Poet and publisher Warren Dean Fulton will be selling pooka press wares, including one of Heather's poems featured as part of their photo booth broadside series.

AURAL Heather are touring in July with dates in Ontario, Montreal, and the eastern US. View the tour schedule and listen to AURAL Heather at http://www.myspace.com/auralheather.

Heather has video poems on her website, http://wwwheatherhaley.com.

She is a published poet and her book is also on her personal website.

AURAL Heather is available for interviews and personal appearaces. Please contact pam@rpwrecords.

AURAL Heather is Heather Haley, Roderick Shoolbraid and 'a unique, sublime fusion of song and spoken word.' Shoolbraid is a dazzling guitarist, composer, sound designer and DJ. Haley is a maverick poet, singer, author and media artist often found pushing boundaries and always on the vanguard.

'A Canadian national treasure', Haley started writing verse in high school influenced by poets like bp Nichol, ee cummings and Susan Musgrave. Her life as a bona fide artist began on the stage of the infamous Smilin' Buddha fronting the all-girl punk band, The Zellots. She was a member of The 45s with Randy Rampage and Brad Kent of DOA and The Avengers. Later she formed HHZ-Heather Haley & the Zellots - praised by music critic Craig Lee as one of 'Ten Great LA Bands'.

She has made a commitment to honesty, feeling, craft and a sense of the absurd. 'Supple and unusual', her work asks all the questions a nice girl's not supposed to ask. Haley is a gutsy and compelling performer who enjoyed a stint as an official BC Transit busker and has appeared at the Vancouver International Writers Festival, Crush Champagne Lounge, the Lamplighter Pub, Rime, Thundering Word Heard, the Art Bar in Toronto, Words & Music in Montreal, the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City, Red Sky Poetry Theatre in Seattle, Shakespeare & Sons in Prague, the Roar Lit Crawl with Edmonton's Raving Poets band and on CBC and Book Television.

In 2004, she teamed up with Roderick Shoolbraid to produce a series of live shows and their first CD, Surfing Season. As Haley returns to her roots, their sound has evolved into the spoken word songs of AURAL Heather . This is 'brawny, uncompromising language from a voice that demands to be reckoned with' and there is nothing precious or flowery about the poetry on Princess Nut. It rocks, in more ways than one!

Praise for Surfing Season: 'Beautiful. A credit to the genre.' - Ian Ferrier, Wired on Words

'Great job! An auspicious disc. One of the best albums of its kind.' - Kurt Heintz, e-poets

'Important work.' - Poseybeat

RPW Records is an independent label in British Columbia, Canada, that showcases, promotes and sells independent music. They produce the compilation albums, Violent Femmes and Coffee Music for Coffee Beings.

Beth Southwell and her band will be opening up the evening, followed by a surprise guest (you've got to love the surprise guest).
Then Aural Heather take to the stage to share their new sound creations.

I hope you will help to spread the word to friends who might like to share this evening with us, or just love the latest news. Spreading the word and sharing is the great thing about MySpace. Thank you everyone

Happy New Year, new music and Future Plans for RPW

Happy New Year to all my visitors and readers. Please tell others about the VIOLET FEMMES MUSIC BLOG. It is the place to discover amazing songs and artists, new music and old.
The Violet Femmes CD is now available for purchase at CD Baby. This is a great way to start the new year. To check it out Click Here You can hear samples of all the tracks before you decide to buy.
You can also find the songs from Violet Femmes for sale as digital downloads on iTunes and Rhapsody and many other websites selling digital music. This gives you the option of buying individual songs, so you can just chosse songs that are your favourites.
As I was investigating the CD Baby site I found this amazing young woman from Scotland called Iona Leigh. She grew up in the spirtual community of Findhorn in North East Scotland, a place many friends of mine have visited, and I have yet to experience.

Anyway I thought I would add her video to my blog for your enjoyment, it is my goal to bring great talent to notice and I hope I can continue to do this as 2008 progresses.

It is exciting to be beginning a New Year and visualizing all the dreams and goals for a new future.

I am excited to be building RPW Records, expanding the roster by signing The Little Brother Band and spoken word artist, Heather Haley .
This will be an exceptional year I am sure.

Familia to play The Roxy

FAMILIA are a great band from Maple Ridge BC and they are emerging as a force to be reckoned with on the local indie scene.
They have a show coming up on Tueday, Jan. 29th 2008 at the Roxy in Vancouver, B.C.
Here is a video of Familia in action

Here is what their mySpace has to say about them.
FAMILIA (latin for family) was conceived in December 2004 when Tamara Umlah (lead vocals) was asked to join brother Cody Hiles (drums, vocals), DJ Abell (bass, vocals), and Bronson Izzard (guitar, afro pick) in a band originally called Cherry Acts, but later changed to FAMILIA.

Mer's vocal prowess took the already ambitious trio to new heights. Winning a fan voted Battle of the Bands for their first ever show, the group set their eyes on the west coast cultural Mecca: Vancouver. From the East side Waldorf to the West side Mesa Luna to the downtown Buffalo Club, FAMILIA left fans craving more of their funky combination of stirring sounds.
Their sound is birthed by a childhood raised on their parents stacks of classic vinyl (Beatles, Zepplin, Stones) married to modern indie styles (Arcade Fire, Belle and Sebastian) toped off with vocals from a an R & B and soul influence. The result is one that holds up under scrutiny of the closest critics to the carefree dance floor enthusiast leaving out no one in between!
Under constant demand from fans for something to listen to at home, FAMILIA set it's sights on recording. A chance encounter with VOGVILLE STUDIO owner and major label producer/engineer JONATHAN FLUEVOG led to a 3 song project released as FAMILIA's first CD in February 07'. Tracked at the WAREHOUSE STUDIO with additional tracking and mixing at VOGVILLE STUDIO, FAMILIA was finally represented on record to the fullest of their musical abilities.
In the summer of '06 FAMILIA traveled to Thailand where they volunteered in several orphanages. The money needed for the trip was raised primarily by a concert series they put on in Maple Ridge, BC, featuring local and out of town bands.

Currently FAMILIA is in the studio recording what will become their debut full length album hoped to be released early '08. " Since the release of our three song demo in February we have realized how much hard work it takes to make a career in music," says Umlah. "Between writing, rehearsing and recording, we're trying to find time to be a world- class live act. We're trying to write music that we are fully pleased with and at the same time won't limit the audience of people that we're trying to relate to. "We want to be heard by as many people as possible to give everyone a chance to make up their mind about FAMILIA." FAMILIA continue to play shows across the Greater Vancouver area and plan to begin touring once they have released their album. They are also devoted to developing a musical scene in their hometown Maple Ridge, BC.
